           Sunday 18th September 2015

          Timbuktu  (cert 12)

In Arabic & French with English Subtitles

                 Directed by Abderrahmane Sissako

Oscar nominated, this film is a study of a tragedy of our times, by the director of the much admired Bamako previously shown by Cinema Obscura.

The ancient city of Timbuktu has been occupied by fundamentalists, here portrayed as immature young men intent on imposing apparently random restraints on the lives of the residents.  However, when they try to impose Islamic  law they find the local people are already more “Islamic” in approach to their faith and justice.

“Sissako’s film revels in the joy of people, of music and of film, making Timbuktu is a formidable statement of resistance in itself.”    Jonathan Romney, The Guardian

We will also during our season be showing a series of short films made by Somerset film makers - courtesy of Independent film makers and Somerset Film
