Wiveliscombe Primary School caters for children between the ages of 4 and 11 years
of age who live in
Wiveliscombe or one of the surrounding villages.
The school's Standard Number (the number of places available in each year group) is currently 38. The school is situated on the outskirts of the small rural town of Wiveliscombe, near the Somerset/Devon border. It is housed in a very attractive Victorian building and offers spacious accommodation with a real sense of character.
The original 1876 school has been extensively modernised and refurbished, and has listed building status. There is a large sports field, complete with an adventure playground built by the PTFA,and a flourishing conservation area . The school is well resourced and offers a friendly, happy and stimulating environment in which children can grow and learn together.
A computer suite has recently been installed and all children will have the opportunity to use this excellent resource. A new school hall will be built on the site during 2003 together with two permanent classrooms
The school aims to provide a safe, happy, caring and well ordered environment in which learning can take place and where each child is valued as an individual. In order to achieve this, the school aims are:
- To help children to develop lively, enquiring minds, the ability to question and argue rationally and to apply themselves to tasks and physical skills.
- To help children to acquire knowledge and skills relevant to life in a rapidly changing world
- To help children to develop literacy and numeracy skills
- To instil respect for religious and moral value, and tolerance and understanding of other cultures, religions and lifestyles
- To help children understand the world in which they live and the interdependence of individuals, groups and nations
- To help children develop appropriate relationships with other children and adults in school and in the wider world
At the age of eleven, most children will transfer to Kingsmead School, our local comprehensive school. There are strong links between the two schools and a great deal of liaison takes place to ensure that the transfer is as smooth and stress-free as possible for all involved. Staff from Kingsmead visit our school and the Year 6 children take part in a number of events at Kingsmead to familiarise them with their new school.
In April 2000, the school became one of 24 primary and secondary schools across Kent and Somerset in the Kent/Somerset Virtual Education Action Zone. This is a very exciting project involving children and staff in a wide range of activities designed to improve the quality of teaching and learning in all schools. The school is equipped with a video conferencing facility which enables children to link-up with children in other schools to discuss joint projects. The school receives extra funding to facilitate the various projects.
The 2002 OFSTED inspection identified the school as an "Excellent school with no issues to address" It was one of only twenty school in England to achieve that status in that year.
The new school hall and 2 permanent classrooms were completed in 2004.
