This column is a marker for the town, situated in The Square, and was part of an initiative by Taunton Deane Borough Council for seven markers in the Taunton Deane area:Wiveliscombe, Wellington, Nynehead, Bishops Lydeard, Taunton, Hestercombe and Burrowbrldge. These markers have been created by artists at Hurstone Art Workshops in Waterrow.

TheWiveliscombe marker was made by local sculptor, Michael Fairfax, and forms part of the town's Heritage Arts Trail

"On one side of the marker is a disc with a phone number to call for tourist information. It also has a shrine element whereby people can commemorate special events, births and deaths, anniversaries, exam results, whatever! The shape revives memories of the column that stood outside the Town hall, there is a map of the town, and the stainless steel circles point through to the Brendon Hills.Most of all the marker is looking to the future to become part of the new history of the town."
