Wiveliscombe Area Website

The Ten Parishes, with a total population of 8,000, is a very rural and unique grouping of parishes that make up the area around Wiveliscombe in Somerset. 'Ten Parishes' is also the name of an ongoing community project.

Wiveliscombe (pop. 2500) is the hub for the area which includes the parishes of Ashbrittle, Bathealton, Brompton Ralph, Chipstable, Clatworthy, Fitzhead, Huish Champflower, Milverton and Stawley.

The area is situated in some of the most beautiful countryside in the South West of England and is a gateway to attractions like Exmoor National Park and the Quantocks Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With the exception of Milverton, a delightful Georgian town with a strong musical tradition, the parishes are small ancient villages tucked into the hills down winding, wooded lanes. It is a friendly part of the world, where neighbours still know each other, and a sense of community thrives.

Together they are working to develop a community, economy and environment that will meet the needs of the people living there now and in future generations.

In 2001 as part of the Market and Coastal Towns Initiative the area embarked on a massive community consultation under the name of the Wiveliscombe Area Market Town Initiative or WAMTI. This initiative was a community based approach to regenerating our Market Towns and involved helping local communities plan for their future, build their skills and access the funding that would enable them to start tackling the projects that make a real difference to their area.

In 2004 WAMTI changed its name to 'Ten Parishes' in order to better reflect the significance of each of the 10 parishes that participated. It is based in Wiveliscombe Community Office.
