Wiveliscombe Area Website

Wiveliscombe’s season came to a close on Friday May 6th with the annual dinner dance at the Rugby Club.

The team has had a difficult season under the captaincy of Matthew Coggon and will play next season in the Somerset League 1. The drop should allow new skipper Eamon Bingham the opportunity to rebuild the team’s confidence although more support from senior players is needed if the next campaign is to be successful.

Seconds and Thirds have had a moderate season severely affected by injuries and unavailability. Stuart Lloyd(captain) takes over from Geoff Johnson and John Brand (vice-captain) replaces Simon Higgins in the Second team. Officials for the Thirds have yet to be announced.

Wivey Colts (under 19’s) have been the most successful having lost only 4 of their 28 matches with 4 drawn. They crushed local rivals Taunton 42-10 late in the season and drew away to Weston in the semi-final of the Somerset Cup. Unfortunately the match was lost on tries scored. Skipper Ian Colley has led by example and things look promising for next season with only a couple of players leaving the squad. Coaches Robert and Peter Stone have worked hard to mould a very good team and should be congratulated for their good work.

Chairman Robert Burston and fellow coach Derek Sharland have built a very promising U14 squad abd have had a good season. The Under 15’s, under the leadership of coach Ian Bristow, have improved dramatically and look to be a superb foundation forfuture Colt’s teams.

Bruce Keay’s Under 12’s are just beginning their club rugby experience and have showed great promise.
