We have arranged an interesting and highly varied programme this autumn:
- Tuesday 18 October: a talk by a former Clerk of the House of Commons who lives on Exmoor. This promises to be a fascinating insight into the workings of the House and is not to be missed.
- Tuesday 15 November: an unrivalled film show of West Somerset wildlife. Peter Sealy, from Bishops Lydeard, has a superb collection of shots of wildlife all over our area from the Quantocks to Exmoor.
- Saturday 3 December: the Society will be reviving its very popular series of winter supper talks. In conjunction with the Historical Society this will be the last local commemoration of the sixtieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War. During the War, so many miners had been called up for military service that in 1943 Ernest Bevin, the Minister of Labour, persuaded the Government that every fourth conscript should go to the coal mines to ensure this country’s continued source of energy. Two of these “Bevin Boys” will be coming to give their account and this is probably the last time that we in Wiveliscombe will have the chance to hear this tale directly from those involved. Put the date in your diaries now!!
All events take place in the Community centre at 7.30pm
