Wiveliscombe Community First Responder Group was originally piloted
by SOUTH WESTERN AMBULANCE SERVICE NHS TRUST (SWAST) in
2001. SWAST covers
Somerset/ Dorset/ Devon/Cornwall and Isles of Scilly and is
predominantly rural. So, it is not always possible for an
ambulance to reach people in rural areas, such as
Wiveliscombe quickly. So, SWAST trains the Community
Responder to respond to any life-threatening emergency
and deliver appropriate care until the emergency
ambulance arrives. Responders are trained in basic life
support and are equipped with defibrillators, oxygen,
first aid equipment and communications.
As the Wiveliscombe Group proved immediately to be successful, SWAST rolled out the First Responder scheme throughout the west country resulting in a further 65 groups subsequently being formed.
The Wiveliscombe Community First Responders are all volunteers. Continual training is provided by SWAST to ensure that all responders keep their skills and expertise updated. The Responders are funded entirely through the generosity of individuals from the Wiveliscombe community and surrounding area who provide all needs including medical equipment and uniforms.
The Wiveliscombe Community First Responders operate a 24 hours/ day 365 days/ year rota to ensure that a minimum of one trained First Responder is on duty and available at all times. An emergency ambulance is always dispatched to any incident attended by a responder.
The Wiveliscombe group is so successful that in 2009, it was presented with the lead Responder achievement shield by SWAST's Chief Executive Ken Wenman. Speaking at that event, Martyn Callow, SWAST Head Community Engagement manager, reported that "The Trust is pleased and proud to work with such dedicated and committed people who give their time voluntarily in order to help their communities. It is very important that they are recognised in this way. Ambulance crews work well in partnership with the responders and appreciate their valuable assistance"
In 2012, the Wiveliscombe Group was rewarded for its
service to the community as part of the
10Radio Community Service Awards.
