This 15th Century church is believed to have been built on a druid circle.
In Roman times, battles took place in the valley below Ashbrittle between Celts and Roman soldiers. The yew tree in the churchyard is over 3000 years old and is thought to be the oldest in the Taunton Deane area. The tree is in the centre of a bronze age mound that is the last resting place of a pre-Roman chief. Legend has it that the church was built on seven skulls and that bones found near the mound were stained red which attests to pagan practices.
